AMEC Project Focus: Bruce Plant Ontario, Canada

Supporting one of the largest and most challenging nuclear engineering projects in Canada.

Amec Power PlantThe Bruce A Restart Project is one of the largest and most challenging nuclear engineering projects to take place in North America. The plant, which has been shut down since 1998, received only limited maintenance. A lot of what we’re doing here is first-of-a-kind work. Before we started this project, there had not been a single steam generator lifted out of a CANDU unit anywhere in the world. Duncan Hawthorne President and Chief Executive Officer Bruce Power From our network of national resources, we were able to assign a team of 400 staff, experienced in nuclear safety and engineering large complex projects. Our services include the provision of program, engineering and construction management on this four-year project. The multi-faceted, multi-billion dollar refurbishment includes the replacement of the pressurised heavy water nuclear plant, and also the replacement of steam generators (Unit 1 and 2), which has never been undertaken before on a CANDU (Canada deuterium uranium) plant. The first restarted unit is expected to be online in 2009. We have achieved 10 million man-hours without a lost time injury for the project, 100 per cent of our environmental goals, and received numerous training accolades. Results / Safety 10 million man hours without a lost time injury.
